Anti infection teaI’m seeing a lot of colds lately, sinus and chest colds, coughs. Usually it’s from some dietary indulgence and a bit of constipation so it’s fairly easy to treat. Here’s a tea I like for prevention or while you are getting treated for a cold.

I recommend to all my patients to take antimicrobial herbs daily, to prevent infections. That may sound strange to some, but we are all getting exposed to bugs everywhere, all the time. The only way to prevent it is to keep yourself strong. When you eat at home, you can control the quality, but in restaurants, you don’t get to see the kitchen and what is going on. By taking herbs that kill viruses, bacteria, parasites and worms, you may be able to prevent yourself from getting a cold or sick. It’s a big bummer to get a cold or food poisoning, wastes a whole day or more of your life. I don’t know about you, but if I take a day off, I want to be lying on a beach or having fun, not in bed with a box of tissues.

Herbs are tonics. They can be taken safely every day. One safe way to take them is herbal tea. You can overdose herbs if you take too many liquid tincture droppers or capsules, although this is truly rare. With tea, it’s very safe since it’s water soluble and it’s not a large amount. It feels refreshing to drink. It makes you feel clean and pure.

I love that the best healing remedies are the ones you can find in your kitchen cupboard. So simple, easy accessible and available. This tea is:
Mint
Basil
Thyme
Rosemary
Hyssop
Boil a cup of water first, then add one or two sprigs of each, steep for 5 minutes, strain, then drink. One to three cups per day, between meals is great for prevention. If you have a cold, then you can drink more. I wouldn’t do more than 10 cups per day.  If you can’t get all of the herbs, use one or two. I get mine at the farmers market, but all grocery stores have fresh basil, mint, rosemary and thyme above where you buy packaged salad greens. Mint is a breath freshener and internal deodorant. Basil is anti-parasitic. Just those two are a great combination. Any combination of the above will do.

Now I have to warn you, the taste is medicinal. I like it. I don’t put honey in this but you can. My herbal teachers said, “learn to eat and drink bitter foods. They are medicinal.” Our bodies are supposed to have all five taste sensations: sweet, salty, sour, bitter and pungent. Look at this diagram of the tongue. We were meant to eat all of these. Unfortunately, most people are just addicted to sweet and salty. You are missing out on good medicine. Bitter foods help you digest and help the liver and gallbladder.

Tongue taste diagramTry something outside the box, outside of the sugary habits that we all have. To be healthy you have to do things that initially don’t seem very fun or comfortable, but then you get used to them and learn to like them. You understand the benefit and power they are giving you and you grow to love it. Like all things, for health you have to work at it. It’s not something you are entitled to, it’s what you eat, drink, think and do every day. Use herbs, they will help you.

I remember when I went to the West Indes to work for a while. I hung out with the the Rastafarians. I bought fresh vegetables from them because they were growing their own food. The grocery food store for the locals was appalling, rejected food from the mainland, and no fresh produce. They would come in to the clinic. I loved hearing stories of how they healed themselves, what they did whenever they are sick. They fast, go into the backyard, pick some herbs, make tea, drink quarts of it until whatever they had was gone. Usually 2-3 days at most. I hear similar stories from people all over the world. Healing your body can be inexpensive and easy.

Healing properties of this tea:
Digestive – stimulates digestive juices, helps you digest if you body is weak at digesting.
Anti-bacterial
Anti-viral
Anti-fungal (anti-candida)
Anti-parasitic
Anthelmintic – kills worms

Now I do have to close this post by saying: if you are sick, go see your doctor (I hope you have one, if not get one), especially if it’s been going on for a while. Untreated infections can spread and even kill you. This recipe is for prevention. Enjoy and be well!
